A digression

Today is the anniversary of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos's fall from power. People are again taking to the streets, this time to call for Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's resignation. The Senate is currently investigating yet another scandal involving her husband, Jose Miguel Arroyo. The "First Gentleman" (and I use the term loosely) and cronies allegedly pressured the government to approve a $329 million National Broadband Network contract with China that would have earned them $130 million in kickbacks. The deal has since been cancelled.

22 years later and what do we have to show for it? Political dynasties; coup plots; widespread corruption; extrajudicial executions of activists, labor leaders, judges, journalists, human rights advocates; suppression of media; all-out war on Communist rebels with forced evacuation, harassment, even torture of civilians in militarized areas; grinding poverty and unemployment, and worst of all, a disillusioned populace.

My, my, how things HAVEN'T changed. Ang kapal ng mukha!
