Broadway on shaky ground?

The backers of Broadway productions who used to shell out cash without a second thought are reportedly shying away from doing just that these days. The New York Post reports that Brigadoon and For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf are having problems pulling together enough money for production, and even Stephen Schwartz's Godspell is hard up for backers. So far, only Billy Elliot and Equus are raking in the cash.

Too bad that some promising shows are having a hard time getting on stage. It makes us wonder though if the backers are simply backing out because they have yet to find productions they can really believe in or if they really don't have the cash.
