Sizzlin' Cabaret with Julia Murney

So this past week was spent in the DC area with a bunch of friends and on Friday night (Aug 5) we caught Julia Murney's concert at the Signature Theatre in Arlington Va.

I have to say, it's so nice to see her again doing a solo concert where you get to hear her sing songs she likes to sing. It's been a while since I've seen her in a solo concert so this was a real treat. The set list was a mix of current songs, standards, songs from her cd as well as mash ups, one of which is between Defying Gravity and Gravity by Sara Bareilles. I liked how the songs were woven together to sort of tell a story. Other songs she performed which I relished were Crazy for You (Adele), Much At All (Susan Werner), So Anyway (Next To Normal), Colored Lights (The Rink) plus I'm Not Waiting from her cd.

As always, it's not only just her voice that makes her concerts such a delight but it's her ability to interpret songs and inject emotions when singing them. Whether she belts out some lyrics or chooses restraint in some, she manages to perfectly know exactly when to do so. It's a gift. I have to say that with Crazy for You and Much At All, she sings it better than the original artists, well at least to me. Her remarks in between songs are always amusing and done with so much ease that the evening feels so off the cuff and natural which, I do love. Maybe that's why I keep coming back.
