The Debt

The Debt is a remake of a 2007 Israeli film.  It stars Helen Mirren (Rachel Singer), Tom Wilkinson (Stephan Gold), and Ciaran Hinds (David Peretz) as former Mossad agents hailed as heroes by their countrymen after a 1966 mission.  They were assigned to capture Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel (a chilling Jesper Christensen), who conducted medical experiments on Jews during WW II.  But what shocking secret are they keeping?

The film shifts from 1997 to the past, where their younger selves are played by Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington, respectively.  The film is at its thriller-best when they're in the '60s.  Vogel is now a practicing gynecologist in East Berlin.  (Rachel is posing as a married woman who is having fertility issues.  Her tense scenes with the creepy doctor added to this viewer's discomfiture.)  As the plot thickens and unravels in flashbacks, older Rachel now has to fill in the pieces of the puzzle and tell the truth. Just like in Red, Ms. Mirren's secret agent comes out of retirement to do the right thing.  It builds up to an explosive and violent ending.

The DVD will be released on 06 December 2011.
